History Of Basirhat

Basirhat has a long history of farmer's movement like 'Tebhaga Andolan'. Freedom fighter Dinesh Chandra Majumder was born here in 1907. There is a lot of controversy and debate regarding the naming of "Basirhat". But all explanations are satisfying and are causally related in some or other way. It implies that if we examine the sources then it will reflect the one or other socio-economic dimensions of the "Basirhat" region.
The sources which are considered till now behind the naming of Basirhat are as follows:
Bahurhat - market for various items.
Banserhat - market for buying and selling bamboos.
Bastirhat - low land market
According to Dr. Sukumar Sen, Basirhat is named after a person named 'Basi'. Referring to Bengali Dictionary, the word Basi means-Indriya Basban, Jitendriya, Apradhin, Sadhin, Swatantra. From this it may be concluded that Basirhat was an independent tax-free business centre. Like present day's Free Business Centres.
Basirhat is named after a person named Basir Muhammad or Basir Khan. In spite of this if we consider Basir Khan's market then it should be around medieval period. But from the records it is clear that Muslim intrusion didn't take place before 1200 B.C. Basirhat's Sahi Masjid was constructed in 1466 B.C.

Sri. Subhas Chandra Kundu

February 17, 2008 marked the beginning of a new chapter in the diary of 'Eso Kichhu Kori'. A new journey too, as we embarked to celebrate EKK's belated birthday on 15th February in search of warmth looking into the corridors of a monument.

Sri Subhash Chandra Kundu is such a person who is more of a saint than any conventional teacher. A teacher with an indomitable passion for education and only education, he himself is an institution. Education is nothing but an arduous practice to him.
A man of extreme caliber, Sri Subhash Chandra Kundu knows no stopping. To every student irrespective of age of Basirhat (North 24 Parganas) and nearby areas, 'Sir' is akin to demi-god and more of a parent than their real parents. And to the general people, he is a living legend. The magnificent physics laboratory set up at his home entirely by himself speaks volumes for him.
His care, dedication, diligence and determination are a lesson for lives to come. In this booming world of increasing glamour & glitz and diminishing values & ethics, Sri Subhash Chandra Kundu stands tall. Life challenged him with all its usual tricks & plays and he could do only one thing – challenge it back!!! And he emerged victorious to make an ideal of a lifetime. We could not have found a better recipient for EKK's first 'Borenyo Somman'08'.

We reached his residence at Basirhat just to spend some time with this icon. We tried to keep the program non-glamorous and simple in every sense, as we never wished to let him feel uncomfortable.
The program was intended to be short yet compact as we wished not to kill much of his time too.

EKK's theme song - 'Aguner Poroshmoni' was the opening song of the program. At the beginning, our beloved 'Sir' was greeted with a bouquet by Smt. Tania De (Member, EKK). Then Smt. Sushmita Ray imparted him with a shawl.Smt. Abira Ghosh (Secretary, EKK) followed next to confer the memento to him.Sri Tilak Gupta (Joint Secretary, EKK) bestowed Sir with the address of honour (Maanpotro) and read it to the audience.
